Set in the Midwest in the 1950s, Come Back Little Sheba delves into the lives of Doc and Lola, a couple founded on an indiscreet affair—Lola became pregnant and, compelled to marry her, Doc gave up his medical studies, forfeited his future and settled down to a life of quiet desperation. Simple, homely Lola lost her child but has remained Doc’s steadfast (yet slatternly) wife. Now a chiropractor and recovering alcoholic, Doc must put his sobriety to the test when Marie, a young college student, becomes their boarder and brings long-dormant hostilities to the surface of Doc and Lola’s troubled marriage.
